The Mystery of the Gospel Made Known

Hebrews 2:14 “Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; 15 And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”

The life, death, and resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ is a mystery that God hid within Himself. (Eph 3:9) The truth of the gospel of the grace of God was kept secret since the world began, and it is through the apostle Paul that we come to understand the mystery of the gospel. (Rom 16:25) In our text we are enlightened as to God’s purpose for the incarnation of the Lord Jesus Christ.

First, we see the vicarious Christ. He became a “partaker of flesh and blood.” He took upon Himself “the form of a servant and was made in the likeness of men.” (Phil 2:8) Secondly, it was through this mysterious, marvelous incarnation that He then, through death, might ultimately be the victorious Christ. Satan’s most powerful weapon was death. Through it he purposed to capture and conquer the crucified Son of man and thus seal his claim as the prince of this world. This would not be the case however; unbeknownst to him, Jesus would use His death on the cross to destroy the devil’s most potent weapon.  He “took part of the same; (flesh and blood) that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil.” Because Jesus died, was buried, and rose again the third day according to the scriptures, Satan’s power grab was dealt a lethal blow. The third truth given in our text is that of the victorious Christian. There is no more dreaded enemy than death, but thanks be to God, the Lord Jesus Christ has delivered us “who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.”

We may join Paul in saying “O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (1 Cor 15:55-57) Friend, you hold the deciding vote as to whether or not the victory of Christ will likewise be yours.
